Ray Roberts Lake State Park

What is Ray Roberts Lake State Park?

Ray Roberts Lake State Park is home to the 29,000-acre Ray Roberts Lake. Nine units comprise the North Texas state park with three being developed: Isle Du Bois, Johnson Branch and Ray Roberts Greenbelt. The undeveloped units include Buck Creek, Jordan, Sanger, Pond Creek, Elm Fork and Pecan Creek. All units are open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Visitors to Lake Ray Roberts can partake in a host of activities including hunting, boating, fishing, hiking and more. Busy season runs from March through November.


Where is Ray Roberts State Park?

Lake Ray Roberts sits about 8.3 miles south of Lone Oak Ranch & Retreat. It’s about 25.3 miles north of Denton. Lone Oak Ranch & Retreat is closest to the Johnson Unit.

Ray Roberts Lake State Park Units

The three developed units of Ray Roberts Lake State Park each offer a unique host of things to do. The Isle Du Bois Unit, which sits on the south side of the lake, includes opportunities for hiking, horseback riding, birdwatching, swimming, fishing and boating. One of the biggest attractions at Isle Du Bois is the Ray Roberts beach area that features picnic tables, a volleyball court, kid’s playground and swimming areas. 


Johnson Branch Unit doesn’t get as much traffic as Isle Du Bois but it still offers a lot of fun options. It sits on the northern edge of the lake and offers opportunities for swimming, boating, fishing and swimming. There is a beach area as well as plenty of paved and unpaved trails for hiking and biking. 


Greenbelt Corridor doesn’t have direct access to Lake Ray Roberts but runs along the Elm Fork of the Trinity River. It features 20 miles of multi-use trails running from the Ray Roberts Dam to Lake Lewisville.

Boating is another popular activity to do when visiting Ray Roberts Lake State Park. Whether it’s motorized or paddle, boating offers a great way to explore Lake Ray Roberts. All undeveloped units on Lake Ray Roberts offer boat ramps as well as Isle Du Bois and Johnson Branch. There are also two marinas --- Lake Ray Roberts Marina at Sanger Unit and Lone Star Lodge Marina at Jordan Unit --- that offer plenty of services.

Boating is another popular activity to do when visiting Ray Roberts Lake State Park. Whether it’s motorized or paddle, boating offers a great way to explore Lake Ray Roberts. There are also two marinas --- Lake Ray Roberts Marina at Sanger Unit and Lone Star Lodge Marina at Jordan Unit --- that offer plenty of services.

 Lake Ray Roberts Hiking, Biking & Horse Trails

The most popular spot for trails in Ray Roberts Lake State Park is the Greenbelt Corridor. This features a 20-mile multi-use trail that allows for 12 miles for horse riders while 10 are designated for hike and bike use. Both Johnson Branch and Isle du Bois feature multi-use trails, some of which are paved. Some of the popular trails in the park include Lost Pines, Randy Bell Scenic Trail, Jordan Park, Johnson Branch and Dogwood Canyon.

 Lake Ray Roberts Hunting

Lake Ray Roberts is also home to some public hunting lands. These are on the northernmost edges of the lake and cover 40,850 acres of lake water surface, upland areas, wetlands and flooded timber areas. The lands are open year round for public use. Public hunting is permitted for feral hogs, dove, quail, woodcock, gallinules, rails, snipe, waterfowl, frogs, rabbits, hares and squirrels.
